If you want to have the highest and best chance of attracting traffic to your site then you need to ensure that you are getting ranked for search terms that people are using. Competition plays a big part so choosing the right keywords to use is a tradeoff between traffic and competition. There is little pint being ranked in position 100 for a highly searched for term.
