There is definitely no better way to explore the world than doing it as a backpacker.  You luggage is kept to a minimum and you can get cheap travel insurance as all you need is basically cover for any medical emergencies.  The best policy intrek offers on a low budget is all you need as it covers unlimited hospital and medical expenses as well as emergency dental of up to 500 pounds.  If your only concern is medical, then go for the bronze policy which is even cheaper.  Backpackers hardly worry about cover for stolen or lost luggage as luggage is kept to a bare minimum.  The best advice I ever got was, if you are taking a camera with you, to also take a USB or external drive with you.  Your camera might get lost or stolen but at least, if you download your photos on a daily basis it will not be lost and you will still have all your memories.
